What a week! I've got a couple rushed notes before I head back home to
the east coast tonight.
The first community summit was awesome. Everyone at Opscode was
thrilled with getting to meet so many of you in person. I was
personally proud of how awesome you all were and how much you cared
about Chef. There are many notes from sessions up here:
If you organized a session please try to add your notes if you didn't.
Everyone else please give it a read over. If you weren't here for the
summit, you can still participate in the results by joining the
conversation here on the mailing list.
As I noted in an earlier email, we released another RC of 0.10.6
today. We're looking at shipping next week now. Because of the summit
we didn't do triage this week, but we got some great suggestions at
the summit. We will pick back up on Wednesday as usual.
There was a lot of conversation at the summit about the work we're
doing with Chef here at Opscode and a rough road map. We've been
working with other databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL, as well as
creating Erlang versions of parts of the Chef Server to better the
scalability. I can't say what will be released when, as it depends on
a lot of other internal projects and we're learning a lot of lessons
and making a lot of improvements, but good stuff is coming down the
road. The Omnibus Client (chef-client and all dependencies in a
single package) beta continues and we will have a new simple interface
to download the installer and trigger it within a week, as well as an
updated list of supported and tested platforms. There is all sorts of
Windows work going on. 0.10.6 contains a number of fixes and we have
some significant file ACL features in 0.10.8.
We're working on a process (my new job is creating and enacting
process) to share what we are up to more regularly through normal
channels as well.
