[chef] Can't set attributes

I've managed to set chef-server up and wrote a few recipes, before hitting a
roadblock. Suddenly all my attributes had disappeared from the chef server. 
The
ui only shows ohai generated values, chef-client only sees these.  
Stompserver,
couchdb, chef-server  are all running. Nothing helpful in the client or server
logs
