Dan,

I don't think that it is worth working on 1.8.6 compatibility because it doesn't support rubygems 1.6.2, which is basically a requirement of Chef. 1.6.2 is also being deprecated, I think, so we're going to need to build a newer version soon.

Looks like there's some ruby 1.8.7+ syntax being used there. I'll file a bug, but in the meantime you can grab Ruby 1.8.7 from Aegis or FrameOS.
