I've being bitten by this bug as well.  We're running chef 0.9.16 on various
CentOS 5.4 and 5.5 VMs.  We're in the process of testing 0.10 but we aren't
quite ready to go to production with it yet.

The one thing I wanted to add is that I can reproduce the segfault reliably:

 ~]# chef-client
/usr/lib64/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/chef-0.9.16/bin/../lib/chef/provider/package/yum.rb:75:
[BUG] Segmentation fault
ruby 1.8.7 (2011-02-18 patchlevel 334) [x86_64-linux]

Aborted

But, also reliably, every single time, if I run "chef-client -l debug" it
succeeds.. no segfaults.  Seems noteworthy.
