No, that is a copy and paste

I assume at some stage of my installation process I specified a 'gems'
directory, and then the installation made another one.
I intend to repeat the build process from scratch soon. Hopefully I will be
able to sort this out.

Yes

While I am still interested in the cause of this issue, I have now set up
startup scripts based on those in
/opt/chef/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/gems/gems/chef-0.10.2/distro/redhat and
this no longer has the 'ruby search path' issue
