[chef] Managing Network Appliances

Hi Guys,

I remember reading that y'all were in the early stages of analyzing
how to extend Chef so it can manage network devices and appliances
that can't run the Chef client. Was curious how far along this effort
was?

With Chef managing almost all of our infrastructure now, we're anxious
to get our firewall and router configs being managed by it. If you
need any guinea pigs for Fortinet or Juniper (JUNOS) gear, we're more
than willing to help out with testing and contributing code for those
platforms.
