[chef] editing nodes with `knife node edit <node-name>` doesn't save

Every time I try to add attributes to a specific node, I get the following message

"Node not updated, skipping node save"

However, I can modify the run_list using `knife node edit <node-name>`

Is it not possible to modify the attributes of a node?
