[chef] knife ec2 server create in a vpc

I'm able to nicely create my server... but the ec2 node attributes are not 
set (ami_id, instance_id.. etc).  actually.. the ec2 node doesn't exist at 
all!

I can't be the first person to run into this problem... any advice out there?

I've been setting these manually through the role... but there has to be a 
better way!
