I would wager that almost all the opensource components have cookbooks written already (officially by opscode in some cases)

It might be best to leverage those where possible. If need be expose more configuration in the upstream cookbook via pull request?

There's also a case to be made for an all-encompassing cookbook with things like vfabric::rabbitmq.
