Hi,

regarding management of git versioned cookbooks and the version(s) on the
server, I wrote a knife plugin that will download all cookbook related files
and diff it with a local or remote git repository, it even allows you to
recursively search for a commit that is closest to the cookbook on the chef
server.

If there is any interest I would try to clean up a little bit and upload it to
github.
