[chef] chef server couchdb hanging

My preprod chef server has now had couch hang for the second time. I
can't find any apparent error message. Process is still running but it
stops listening for requests and chef server starts getting connection
failures. A restart of couch fixes the problem. It isn't during log
rotation or couchdb compaction. Any idea what could be happening or
how to get more info out of a hung couchdb server?

Backgroud:

RHEL 6.1 system VM on cloudstack on KVM

Chef server 0.10.4

couchdb-1.0.2-8.el6.x86_64
