The main problem is that the thing tries to build all the stuff with
make -j2, which breaks on FreeBSD for some software.
IIRC, for libedit you have to use one of the patches provided by
the port (/usr/ports/devel/libedit)
I don't remember what stuck next, but from looking at it, it's
chock-full of linux-isms. And there does not seem to be a global switch
to set certain build-options - e.g. disable -j2 globally.
I really like the idea of having chef outside the package-management
and I do like the idea of having one exactly identical version of chef
on all of our platforms - but currently, the omnibus-installer leaves a
lot to be desired....
My coworker wanted to upload the stuff we changed to a git repository,
but he's been busy with other work.
