I'd suggest we add node attributes to control the shallow clone setting you speak of as a quick fix, as these won't need to be controlled with rewind or re-opening resources.

The proper fix would be to handle this in the LWRP.

@Leo:

Look at https://github.com/opscode-cookbooks/application/pull/15 which adds supports for all of the SCM attributes, except shallow_clone itself. You should be able to figure out how to do that yourself.
Then file a bug in Jira and send a pull request (mentioning this one as related).
