Hi,

I have talked with someone who has automated the management of WebLogic application server (and I assumes the install) and they were quite happy with it. They used the cli tool to do most of the interaction. Unfortunately the results are not OSS and are never likely to be :(

I can only speak for Oracle RAC but I would guess it's much the same situation with the other commercial software installers.  We attempted to do automation with setting up Oracle RAC but ran into issues getting the install automated so it looks like we only automated the setting up of kernel parameters (kernel.shmmax, net.core.rmem_max, etc), pre-requisite linux packages (gcc, compat-db, libaio-devel, etc) and oracle users.   I would guess with products like this your not going to find much in the way of automation unless somehow the companies themselves get convinced to make their software more friendly to being automated.  Microsoft has been trying to push companies to MSI (1999) installation to allow automation on their platform and they are still getting resistance.  So if the 800 lb gorilla can't make it happen in 14 years you can guess what our chances are. That is just all the more reason to push everything to open source.  As I keep annoying our DBA's with, have you tried Postgres?

Folks,

I'm sure that lots of people have done automated installs for this kind of software, but I'm wondering if I'm missing anything when it comes to finding existing Chef cookbooks for deploying any of the following:

WebLogic
Oracle RAC
LogRhythm
NetBackup

I haven't found anything obvious on the Chef community cookbook site or on github, so I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone knows of any other good sources.

Thanks!
