IMO you should upgrade to chef 11 server and clients, and switch over to the omni client and omni server. It will save you some pain on Cent. There Is an Opscode blog post that goes over the process here:http://www.opscode.com/blog/2013/03/12/5106/ . Many people, and myself, have recommended this blog post that details the process http://www.ducea.com/2013/03/05/howto-migrate-to-chef-11/ using a different knife plugin.

If you use the chef omni installers then you don't need to touch your system ruby version.

Changes to be aware of when upgrading to chef11 are listed here: http://docs.opscode.com/breaking_changes_chef_11.html
and more info on the attribute changes can be found here: http://www.opscode.com/blog/2013/02/05/chef-11-in-depth-attributes-changes/

Hi to all,
I have a chef environment that I would like to upgrade.
Chef Server: 10.12.0
Chef-clients: 10.14.4 on CentOS 5 (and a few clients with 10.18.2 on CentOS 6)

1) Could/should I upgrade to chef server 11 and latest chef-client?
2) Is there any documentation on the upgrade process?
3) Could I also upgrade ruby version to 1.9?

Thanks!
