Knife is a program meant to interact with the Chef server, to see what
information it has cached from whenever the most recent chef-client run was
on that particular node. It is a program that is meant to be run from your
Chef Workstation, not from individual nodes themselves.
Using a cookbook to update the motd file as part of each chef-client run is a
good idea.
