Here at Gravitant we are using opensource chef server.  What is the best way to use the newrelic agent to monitor the chef-server?  Any advice to hook the newrelic agent, after gem installation, into chef-server?

Hopefully you're either on Chef 11 or planning to upgrade. In Chef 11, the API service is written in Erlang, which to my knowledge New Relic doesn't support. You might be able to install New Relic on the web interface (which is rails) but in general the API gets 100x (or higher) more traffic so it's not very interesting.
