Thanks for pointing this out Mathias. We didn't have a change in the output flushing but definitely needs investigation.

Julian & Sean has also observed the same behavior. More info here:

A temp workaround for you maybe setting the log_level to :debug as explained in the ticket.

Hey Serdar,

Local mode sounds pretty awesome! Need to give this a try.

There's already one thing I noticed after installing Chef 11.8.0 with vagrant-omnibus: For some reason, Vagrant (1.3.5) can no longer stream the output of Chef when running `vagrant provision`. Instead the whole log output is only displayed once the Chef run has completed.

I've been working with Chef 11.6.2 for the last 6 weeks and definitely know that this version did not have that problem. So I guess output buffering or something related must have changed somehow.

Cool stuff! Our application developers are going to love this :-)
From looking at the release notes I'm left with a question: Does local mode only support json format for roles and environments?
Is that the recommended repo format, and should my team switch over from ruby dsl?

Thanks!

Hey Chefs,

What's a better day than Halloween to make a release :)

We've released 11.8.0 of Chef Client and 6.20.0 of Ohai today.

You can read more about these releases here:

Two of the highlights of the release are:

1-) Chef Client Local Mode which makes it dead simple to get started with Chef
2-) Groundwork for getting to enable SSL verification in Chef.

You can read more these features here:

Big shout out to this release's MVP Eric Saxby for making Chef better on SmartOS. Thanks a lot Eric...

Check out 11.8.0 and let us know if you hit any problems.

Thanks and happy Halloween :)
