Are you using AFW cookbook and it's associated network_addr custom Ohai plugin? I experienced that ... an upgrade of chef-client to latest version fixed the issue for me.

For example our firewall is managed by Chef, it uses network.* attributes information.
Due to some issue nodes get blocked by firewall it happens when network attributes are lost.
The network.interfaces is simply empty.

What component or what can cause this problem?
