[chef] Validation.pem clarification

Please provide clarification as to when you use 
    chef-validator.pem 
    versus
    validation.pem 
(using chef v11)

I have clients manually bootstrapped to chef server that are using 
chef-validator.pem and clients that are bootstrapped using 'knife-vsphere vm 
clone' process that use validation.pem.
All are Chef version 11. 

Why?
Which one is correct?
