Chef is not designed to serve in the role of a large binary repository.  
There are other tools that are much better suited to do that sort of thing, 
and IMO you should use the right tool for the job.

Chef does a lot of things well, but there are some things that it does not do 
at all, or does not do well.  This is one of those things.


If you want to take a hammer and use it to drive in all your screws, you 
shouldn't be surprised if the result is something ... less than you had hoped 
for.
