Yes my bad! I was under the impression that I needed the "public" key instead
of the "private" key in my ~/.chef directory, but I know otherwise now.

Do you mean the public half of the key pair? It lives in the database next to
all the other clients. the only thing that makes it special really is its
permissions which are initialized when the org is created.
