[chef] Chef Data Bags and Binary Data

I am sure this has been asked before but I can not seem to find anything useful on the Interweb about this.

Does anyone have a method or experience with storing/retrieving binary data in a data_bag.

I was thinking about a uuencode/uudecode paradigm but do not want to reinvent the wheel here if one has already been created.
