Yes, you can just use local mode with chef provisioning. Here's an example:

The readme there talks about using local mode. That example uses Azure, should be similar for aws.

Hi All,

 

I’m in the process of rebuilding my machine. Is it possible to use Chef Provisioning to provision a windows node, without using a Chef server?

I’ve got a Windows autounatend xml file, so could install chef from there.

Any help appreciated.
