Hey, I'm starting to think about the server infrastructure for a new
Rails-based site I'll be deploying on EC2 in the next half-year or so. I was
wondering how, in your experience, Chef has played with something like
Vlad/Capistrano for deploying new versions of a website? Have you kept the
two separate? Is there a way for Chef to assist in deployment that has
worked well? Maybe you could update the wiki with some insights into that,
as it's not quite clear how the two might inter-operate at the moment.

David, I cc-ed the Chef mailing list as well.

We haven't done any direct Vlad/Capistrano integration yet. In the
short term it should be easy to plug in the search capabilities of
Chef, so that you can dynamically configure the hosts and roles for
your deployment recipe.  (ie: "Which system is the database, which are
my web frontends")

Long term, I believe we will get to a place where tools like Vlad and
Cap are orchestrating Chef Resources in real time, rather than
directly modifying the system.

We'd be glad to work with you on getting a first pass at the search
level integration done for Vlad or Cap.  Drop a note on the list, or
stop by #chef on irc.freenode.net.

Regards,
Adam
