Yes, 0.8 ships with a super-powered upgrade to knife. Every API endpoint can be driven from there and $EDITOR.

You can not run the web ui at all - now a totally separate app.

This sounds promising. Is the command-line tool a permanent fixture? Can
the chef server be run without any web UI at all?

I resigned myself to having one anyway but if I can go without (or at
least use chef without it for the time being) that's a major plus.

I'd like to say I'll help out but I rarely have the time to do it these
days.
