The community cookbooks are a great resource but when you're starting
out it isn't immediately apparent what or how you're supposed to use
them.

There's an example of the correct pattern to use here:

Granted it uses WordPress which is quite different to BIND!!!!!!!!but
the library/application cookbook pattern it uses is a good starting
point.

Essentially, use features of the BIND cookbook from a cookbook you create.
