I assume you aren't using the Omnibus installer. Is this the case? 

If that is the case, does anything prevent you from using the Omnibus installer? Doing so will get you Ruby 1.9+.

I am using OPSWorks in AWS and faced with the issue with ruby 1.8.7.   I really need to use Ruby 1.9 or greater with some of my recipes.   I am not sure how to specify in the cookbook to use a specific ruby version instead of the system default.

Any pointers would be appreciated.
