You can remove ruby all together and then install 1.9; however, if you don't want to break anything, I would suggest using RVM (allows you to have multiple ruby instances and set the running version). It's nice bc you can switch easily and you can disable RVM and use the system default Thanks,

Sounds like good advice. Could you perhaps recommend a safe way to uninstall ruby 1.8 without muffing up ruby 1.9?
