start with 'dpkg -l | grep ruby' and 'dpkg -P' all the ruby stuff
you find...
then, only if you need it for something, start with 'apt-get
install ruby1.9.3'
i would skip rbenv or rvm entirely unless you really need them,
setting them up system-wide as root is generally more of a pain
that its worth.

Sounds like good advice. Could you perhaps recommend a safe
way to uninstall ruby 1.8 without muffing up ruby 1.9?
