Windows as a platform has better support for changing install locations, so
we’re looking into supporting this eventually. One issue is that a lot of
things don’t support paths with spaces correctly and these are largely out of
our control. So the outlook for being able to install chef to C:\Program
Files (if this is what you want to do) is pretty grim. If you search around
for issues with Ruby DevKit and installing to ‘Program Files’, you’ll find
plenty of examples.
