The chef setup is complex, but the search functionality is by far the most 
useful piece. We totally depend on this, and it would be harder to make it 
work without the server implementation as it is. For example, nagios checks, 
internal DNS and haproxy rules for applications are all configured directly 
from search results.

The client/server setup is cumbersome, but using chef itself to bootstrap 
those makes this a painless process.
