I don't think there's an accepted "best practice" here, so I'd advise
following a YAGNI strategy here; that is, do the simplest thing that solves
your problem for now without screwing yourself into a lot of work in the
future. If you build up unnecessary complexity before you need it, it's just
going to get in your way later.
