Wouldn't cgroups just limit the amount of memory chef could use? It wouldn't
really "solve" the problem.
Just run chef-client from cron and come up with a simple way to trigger it.
Simple thing in (x)inetd should be good enough.
FWIW, a few weeks into using monit with chef-cient - so far so good.
