Exactly! I was looking at a similar scenario... where we have multiple virtual
nodes where Chef can't be running, but still when those needs to be
configured...

So by specifying a --node-name while running Chef, will it be able to
automatically pick the node specific json file with the attributes and run 
list
required for that node?
or it has to be specified through -j option while invoking Chef.

I am not able to see the difference in (i) running chef with different json
files vs. running chef by specifying different node-names. 
Not sure if I am missing something here.
