I’d actually recommend using IP’s for the chef server, in general. If your DNS is managed from chef, and accidentally fails due to a misconfiguration, it can be very awkward to get chef-client to run on the messed up DNS server to clear the problem without this.

Subject: [chef] fqdn and Chef Server

Hi!

At work we want to setup a Chef server but we don't have DNS servers
that we can touch and so we work with IP addresses. Can the Chef
server work with an IP address instead of a fqdn?

Thanks,
