I was trying to create centos ec2 instance and 

knife ec2 server create -r "role[centosAdmin]" -I ami-xxxx -f m1.large -G xxx_relay -x root -N xx_server2 -S xxxDB -i /root/xxxDB.pem -d centos5-gem --ebs-size 100

Could you tell us the command you're running? Also, what operating system you are trying to bootstrap?
