In reality, my employment contract wouldn't allow me to get anything
resembling real compensation for open-source work. Even a conference
admission would be too much.
+1 to the idea of special apparel that you can only get if you're a chef
contributor. Something where you can recognize the "chef people" from
across the room. You could offer special breakout sessions at conferences
just for contributors too. Make it a cool kids' club.
In addition to flagging bugs that are important to fix, it would be nice to
offer to pair-program (remotely) for couple of hours with the newbies. The
first bug-fix is the hardest.
