Sadly and embarrassingly I have.
We rolled our own Ruby Enterprise (1.8.7) RPM and just use the provided gem
binary to install the chef rubygem.
Not many cookbooks are compatible with RHEL4, so it was a lot of rewriting
cookbooks specifically for RHEL4.
Other than the initial cost of getting everything tested and reworked for
RHEL4, everything works as expected. RHEL4 is very much a one off in our
environment and will hopefully not be around much longer, although legacy
things have a way of sticking around longer than you'd like.
